Traveller information
Turkmenistan is a Central Asian country on the Caspian Sea, mainly comprised of the Karakum Desert. Once a stop on the Ancient Silk Road, Turkmenistan is home to a culture that goes back thousands of years. From the bizarrely beautiful capital of Ashgabat, with its golden statues and marble promenades, to the rugged expanse that encompasses most of the country, Turkmenistan is one of the most unique destinations you can visit. Its inhospitable landscape means that a lot of its ancient, raw beauty exists to this day, and you’re bound to experience many memorable traveling experiences.
Turkmenistan is actually the least-visited country in Central Asia. If you’re looking for rural exploration and real rugged adventure, Turkmenistan should be on your list of destinations. Outside of Ashgabat’s marble promenades lies the expanse of the Karakum Desert, the eternally burning Darzvaza Gas Craters, and the ancient city of Konye-Urgench; a place that will cast you back thousands of years to the height of the Silk Road. And remember, the Turkmen are a friendly and curious people. Their hospitality is always well-noted after the first glass of vodka hits the back of your throat.
