Traveller information
This island just over 100 miles from the coast of mainland China boasts a fascinating history steeped in Taiwanese, Chinese and Japanese culture, packing many attractions into its small size. The National Palace Museum in the capital Taipei is a good starting point with its hundreds of thousands of exhibits including art, calligraphy, jade and lacquerware, giving you an insight into the island’s intriguing story.
Opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate nature are endless. Although it doesn’t cover much territory, the island accommodates nine national parks and much of the rest is covered by forests and mountains. The most impressive are known as the 100 Peaks of Taiwan, so you can take your pick for hiking destinations offering stunning views over lush plains and forests and a spine-tingling atmosphere.
The island’s towns and cities come alive after dark as the many night markets sell their wares. Shilin Night Market in the capital Taipei is a bustling attraction with stalls piled high with goods and a food court offering local cuisine such as oyster omelettes, Taiwanese noodles and fried chicken – an absolute must for foodies.
