Traveller information
Tropical rainforests and a melting pot of cultures typify Suriname, South America’s smallest country perched on its north-eastern coast. This former Dutch colony retains many of its historic influences, including the distinctive wooden buildings of Paramaribo, the capital. Take a tour around the old city to take in the many influences that have contributed to this unique culture, visit the Garden of Palms behind the Presidential Palace for a peaceful interlude or make your way to Vaterkrants Boulevard for shopping and dining.
From the capital you can explore the coast, where you will find attractions such as Jodensavanne, the remains of a community set up by Jews fleeing from persecution in Spain in the fifteenth century, or beaches where turtles gather to lay their eggs from late February to May. Visiting one of the many nature reserves – Brownsberg, Central Suriname or Galibi are three of the best-known names – will introduce you to a rich variety of species, including some that are unique to Suriname. Brightly coloured birds, monkeys, jaguars and sloths are just some of the creatures you may be lucky enough to spot on this memorable trip.
