Traveller information

The Pitcairn Islands are an extremely isolated group of four islands in the South Pacific. The nearest airport, Mangareva, is 330 miles away. The remote destination really highlights the hardiness of its people, and it’s truly one of the most secluded destinations you can ever visit. First settled on by a group of nine Mutineers from the ship ‘Bounty’ and some of their Tahitian companions, the Pitcairn Islands now has a population of around 50 individuals, derived from four original families. Some of the ship remains in the bay and there is a museum in the small settlement of Adamstown where you can see artefacts from the wreck.

Beyond its unique history, the landscapes are quite breathtakingly… empty. It’s a good idea to travel to some of the other islands, including Oeno, which is known for its sandy beaches that are far more suitable for beach days and swimming than those near Adamstown on the main Pitcairn Island. The largest of the islands, Henderson Island, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to several different species of endangered birds. There’s also Ducie Island, which is the furthest away but is home to unique wildlife.
