Traveller information

The Arabian country of Oman boasts magical, shifting desert landscapes; an ancient, rich heritage; bustling, colourful markets, and sleek, contemporary buildings. It’s an extraordinary destination which tends to fly under the radar of many travellers – but that only makes it more special for those who do venture there.

Port capital Muscat is nestled between mountains, ocean and desert. Cutting-edge contemporary architecture such as the elegant, all-white Royal Opera House rubs shoulders with centuries-old, historic landmarks such as the imposing 16th-century Al Jalali Fort. The sprawling contemporary architecture of Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is well worth a visit, as is the chaotic and colourful Mutrah Souq. Bedouin tribes roam in the rolling dunes of Sharqiya Sands, a beautiful stretch of land between Muscat and Sur that’s full of traditional culture and sweeping vistas. The sturdy walls of 19th-century Nakhal Fort, built on the foundations of a pre-Islamic structure, have wonderful views out over the Batinah Plain. Jebel Shams, the country’s highest mountain, has plunging, vertical views down the Wadi Ghul, also known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia.
