Traveller information
Romantic, astoundingly diverse, and heavily influenced by Berber, Arabian and European cultures, the North African country of Morocco is an unmissable destination for any traveller. Whether it’s colourful, spice-filled markets, Atlantic surfing, spectacular Islamic architecture, or simply chowing your way through the country’s flavourful cuisine – whatever takes your fancy, Morocco is a destination to steal your heart.
Capital Rabat is a little off the beaten track but makes up for this with the lovely, 12th-century Kasbah of the Udayas, French colonial buildings, a charming walled Medina, and a clean, sun-soaked beach, as well as numerous museums and galleries. Head to Marrakech for numerous, maze-like souks, full of jewellery, textiles, ceramics, and metal lanterns. Main square Djemaa El Fna has been constantly in use for approximately a thousand years and is always a hub of action. At night, expect musicians, street performers, and grilled meat. During the day, you’ll see snake-charmers and other performers ply their trade. Running across Morocco in a diagonal line are the High Atlas Mountains, the highest peaks in North Africa, and there’s top surfing to be found in the formerly sleepy seaside town of Taghazout.
