Traveller information
Mayotte is a group of French-controlled islands off the coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The largest island, Grande-Terre (or Maore) is home to a large portion of the population and you’ll likely be based here while you explore this interesting land. Known for its incredible marine life, diving in Mayotte is a must. There are all sorts of tours you can arrange to explore the National Marine Park that encompasses almost all of Mayotte’s coast.
In one of the world’s largest lagoons, or along the coral reef that encircles the island, you can spy humpback whales with their calves and nesting sea turtles on the southern beaches. Along with the beautiful waters, you’ll also find plenty of excellent beaches dotted across the islands. Some of the most popular include the Plage de Tanaraki, with its flat, sandy stretch flanked by trees, and the Plage de Sakouli, again sandy, but also known for its good snorkelling. We recommend booking a room, hostel or hotel in Mamoudzou, the coastal capital of Mayotte. There are a few tourist spots here, including one or two hikes to get a better look over the island and town.
