Traveller information

Libya is a historical treasure trove. Once where great empires flourished, primarily the Romans and Greeks, this nation on the edge of the Sahara is an adventurer’s dream. Buried deep in the desert lie astounding ancient ruins, including top sights such as the Leptis Magna at Al Khums or Ptolemais at Benghazi. The capital city of Tripoli is also a place where the ancient world is still visible, with the incredible arch of Marcus Aurelius and the Red Castle both symbols of the land’s imperial past. Beyond the man-made structures, the landscape itself speaks of past glory. Libya is home to perhaps the most beautiful sections of the Sahara Desert, where smooth dunes roll out endlessly against a blue sky.

However much Libya attracts you, whether it be the lure of history or of unspoiled wilds, the country is still undergoing major civil unrest. Following political chaos in 2011 and 2012, much of the country is off-limits to tourists and the UK Commonwealth office advises against travel to the country. You are still able to visit, and there are expats that live in Tripoli. Thankfully much of the fighting and risk remains in the deep desert.
