Traveller information
Iran is an immense country, both in terms of size and of cultural intricacy. Millenia of civilisations have existed in this land and this culminates in what is one of the most interesting countries on earth, for its tasteful and majestic architecture, the overwhelming hospitality of its people, and the delicate and world-famous flavours of Persian/Iranian cuisine. Plus, there are fantastic historic sites with preserved remnants of the past, where some of history’s greatest names – Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan, for example – once stood.
Begin in Tehran, the nation’s capital. A sprawling city at the foot of the Alborz Mountains, Tehran has a dynamic liberal atmosphere and an impressive skyline of skyscrapers and minarets. Admire the city from the Tabiat Bridge and experience Iran’s famed architecture at the Golestan Palace. Head to Shiraz as a base to explore Iran’s historic sites. Venture to Persepolis to explore the ancient ruins of one of humankind’s greatest empires, the Persian dynasty. Further on from Persepolis, under 15 miles away, you’ll find Naqsh-e-Rostam. This incredible necropolis carved in the face of a mountain is the resting place of powerful emperors from antiquity. Other top destinations to visit in Iran include Tabriz for its Old Town and Kashan for its cool gardens.
