Traveller information
Historical, beautiful Ghana is a rich destination full of opportunities to explore, whether you’re interested in stately colonial towns, sturdy coastal fortresses, quiet, shady beaches, or varied wildlife. Added to this, the country’s strong, stable democracy and vibrant culture mean that it’s bursting with an energy all of its own.
Set on the country’s Atlantic coast, capital Accra is known for its sprawling Makola Market, full of noisy crowds, the shouts of market vendors, and colour everywhere. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, which commemorates the prominent Ghanian leader of the same name, is located in the city’s downtown. Labadi and Kokrobite beaches are hotspots for nightlife and lounging on golden-sand shores. For something a little more serene, head to nearby (private) Bojo Beach, a pristine strip of sand lapped by crystal-clear water. Head to Kakum National Park for treetop walks over lush rainforest, or to Mole National Park for one of the best places in the country to spot wildlife including elephants, baboons and warthogs. Cape Coast is home to the imposing, whitewashed Cape Coast Castle, which was once an important site of African slave trading and is now a fascinating museum. Head to the laid-back town of Busua for some of the best surfing in the country.
