Traveller information

Usually a highlight for those who are touring Antarctica, the Falkland Islands are an interesting destination for a holiday if only to witness the uniqueness of its climate, wildlife and people. Acquired, at one point, by almost all of the great Colonial powers, the islands are now British and have been since the early 19th century. Two large islands, covered in a sort of seamless green landscape, are known as East and West Falkland. The capital of Stanley is located on the East island, but beyond its limits is a wild landscape of penguins, sheep farms and nesting seabirds.

A trip to the Falkland Islands will start in Stanley, though. It’s a great idea to check out the Falkland Islands Museum to learn about this archipelago’s complex history before exploring. Heading out of town you’ll realise just how sparse the Falklands really are. With a population of just over 3,000, most of the island is given over to their original settlers…plenty of penguins, sea lions and birds. The empty beauty of destinations like Cape Pembroke, where even the lighthouse is automated, are perfect for those seeking total peace. And to see that fabled penguin population, head to Yorke Bay.
