Traveller information
A turbulent political situation means that Chad isn’t always accessible to tourists. Even when it’s safe to visit, the north-central African country is an adventurous destination, and travel throughout the country is generally difficult. However, for those travellers resilient enough to make the journey, a world of hidden treasures await. Whether it’s sweeping Saharan deserts punctuated with surreal rock formations, gorgeous green oases, or the deep blue depths of Lake Chad, a visit to this off-the-beaten-track country is full of unforgettable experiences.
Capital N’djaména is the largest and most modern city in the country. Although it’s not Chad’s most appealing destination, it’s home to lively markets, spectacular sunset views over the river, imposing colonial buildings on Avenue Charles de Gaulle, and Chad National Museum. A number of tours leave here for Dourbali, a city populated by the Fula people and various nomadic tribes. Head to the vast Zakouma National Park for a chance at spotting lions and elephants, or to Emi Koussi, the highest volcanic peak in the Sahara Desert, for dramatic treks. The large natural formation of Aloba Arch is one of the country’s most unique sights. Guelta d’Archei, in northeastern Chad, is a serene river frequented by camel caravans and animals including the West African crocodile.
