Traveller information
One of the most naturally diverse countries in South America, Bolivia is a fascinating destination. It’s home to surreal landscapes such as the vast salt flats of Salar de Uyuni, where vibrant pink flamingoes are the most common wildlife you’ll see; multicoloured, psychedelic rock formations, dinosaur footprints at Torotoro National Park, and the deadly mines of Cerro Rico. Its high-altitude administrative capital, La Paz, is full of historical buildings, possesses the longest cable car network in the world, and is surrounded by rugged, rocky landscapes including the snow-covered peaks of Illimani mountain.
In addition to this, Bolivia has a rich and varied cuisine, a fusion of Hispanic dishes with local and indigenous ingredients. Adventurous foodies can even sample guinea pig and llama meat, often at a sizzling, delicious-smelling street food stall. Vineyards across the country produce excellent vintage wines, and Bolivia is poised to be the next big thing in the wine world. Traditional customs are important to Bolivians, and you’ll see pre-Columbian style textiles everywhere you go. Folk music and dances are still commonly practised and can be seen at various colourful festivals, including Alasitas Festival, Carnival, and Fiesta del Gran Poder.
