Traveller information
Located at the meeting point between the Atlantic and Caribbean oceans, Antigua and Barbuda is a nation made up of scattered islands. Fringed by pristine, reef-lined beaches, and tinged with buccaneer history, its enchanting shores are certain to beguile. Inland, lush rainforests and resorts entice visitors.
The two biggest islands are those for which the country is named, Antigua and Barbuda respectively. Barbuda offers opportunities for birdwatching at the Codrington Lagoon National Park, one of the largest frigate bird colonies in the world, and laid-back Caribbean villages. Livelier, larger Antigua is home to a Unesco World Heritage site, the Georgian-era marina at Nelson’s Dockyard National Park. This is located in the charming English Harbour, where buzzing restaurants and businesses have taken up residence in restored colonial buildings. Natural rock formations at the entrance to this harbour are known as the Pillars of Hercules and rise precariously out of the ocean. Trek through the rainforest to reach the remote Rendezvous Bay beach, or head to Half Moon Bay in the eastern part of the island for snorkelling, bodyboarding, or sipping rum cocktails by the water’s edge. Across all the islands, you’ll see bright, colourful Caribbean local culture, which you can delve further into at the National Museum, located in the vibrant capital of St. John’s.
