Traveller information
With a curving Caribbean coastline, tropical rainforests, and the dramatic, rugged Andes, the South American country of Venezuela is home to some of the continent’s most breathtaking landscapes. It’s wise to check up-to-date safety advice before travelling here, as some parts of the country are riskier for visitors. There’s plenty to do in Venezuela wherever you visit, however, whether you’re charmed by the country’s vast national parks, picturesque colonial architecture, delicious, diverse cuisine, or its rich culture.
Bustling capital Caracas is cosmopolitan and home to the excellent Museum of Contemporary Art. For something a little calmer, head to colonial town Mérida, a jumping-off point for exploring the sprawling Sierra Nevada National Park and numerous adventure sports, including paragliding. Trips also depart from here to see wildlife at Los Llanos, and to catch lightning at Catatumbo. Mérida’s high Andean location makes it a perfect spot for stargazing, and the Centro de Investigaciones de Astronomía admits visitors during holiday periods and weekends. Go island-hopping at the Los Roques national park, or see wildlife including piranhas, howler monkeys, and wild parrots at the lush Delta del Orinoco. Venezuela is also home to the world’s highest waterfall, 979-metre-high Salto Ángel.
