Traveller information
Set in the South Pacific Ocean, Tonga is a laid-back nation made up of over 170 islands scattered across azure waves. A number of these are completely uninhabited, and even the largest have a sleepy vibe, with chickens and pigs roaming free. Powdery white-sand beaches are fringed by coral reefs, and lush, green rainforests lie inland. Island life isn’t geared towards tourism, making Tonga a refreshingly ‘authentic’ destination, and the country’s magical natural features, combined with a pinch of heritage, whale-spotting opportunities, and an incredibly welcoming culture, might just steal your heart.
Tongatapu is Tonga’s main island, and home to capital Nuku’alofa. Wander through the town’s vibrant, colourful Talamahu Market, or head to Ha’amonga ‘a Maui Trilithon, an ancient Polynesian coral arch whose origins are shrouded in mystery. On the shoreline at Mapu’a ‘a Vaea, hundreds of blowhole-laced rocks eject crashing surf up into the air to heights of 30 metres. Visitors can walk over the top of Hufangalupe Archway, a remote natural land bridge which stretches out over the ocean’s waves, and excellent surfing is to be had at Ha’atafu Beach. Head to Neiafu for majestic, white-walled St Joseph’s Cathedral.
