Traveller information
Niue is a tiny and relatively unknown island nation in the South Pacific. This is a unique destination for its impressive caves, awesome diving sites, and the chance to lay eyes on groups of humpback whales who use the calmer seas around the island as a safe port to raise their young. The capital of Niue, Alofi, has a population of only 1,600 but does offer a few guesthouses, shops and a resort.
There is plenty of exploration to be had, even on minuscule Niue. For hiking, head into the Huvalu Forest Conservation Area, which inhabits the bottom right quarter of the island. Deep inside this forest, which grows alongside stacks of fossilized coral-reef, is the popular Togo Chasm and Matapa Chasm hiking tracks. It’s best to travel with a local, even if you are seeking wild adventure. Beneath the waves there is much to see in do in Niue’s rich waters, including plenty of snorkelling, diving and boat tours. Check out Tautu Reef or the Limu Pools. You can also rent your own boat and explore the island’s many caves, of which the Tavala Arches and Talaha Cave are the most popular sights.
