Traveller information
An archipelago scattered through the South Pacific Ocean, Fiji is made up of 332 islands, only 110 of which are inhabited. It’s full of stunning golden beaches fringed by gently swaying palm trees, and diving spots set over serene coral reefs. Add the country’s rich culture and lush tropical island interiors, and it’s easy to see why this destination is so well-loved.
The heart of Fiji is its capital Suva. The largest city in the region, it’s packed full of lush greenery and lively culture. See artefacts including the ship’s rudder from the Bounty (known for its famous mutiny), war clubs, and 13-metre-long Ratu Finau, Fiji’s last double-hulled canoe, at the excellent Fiji Museum. The striking indigenous-influenced Parliament of Fiji building is here, as well as colourful fresh produce at bustling Suva Municipal Market. To get away from the city, head to Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, a jewel-bright area of rainforest full of clear pools, beautiful views, and the hum of insects and birds. Suva is on Viti Levu, one of the country’s major islands. Explore the grottoes of limestone island Sawa-i-Lau, or get active at the Lavena Coastal Walk, which has numerous swimming opportunities, a black-sand beach, waterfalls, and quiet villages. More adventurous types should head to Pacific Harbour, where energetic sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing reign supreme.
