Traveller information
Long and narrow, Chile’s Pacific Ocean coastline stretches along the western edge of South America for over 6,000 kilometres. It’s full of majestic, dramatic mountain peaks, rivers roaring down to the sea, and breathtaking stretches of wilderness. Chileans call their country the “pais de los poetas”, or “country of poets”, and its rich heritage lies ready to be explored. Spanish influences merge with indigenous traditions to create Chile’s unique food, drinks and culture.
Capital Santiago is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city which over 40% of Chileans call home. Full of grand palaces, museums such as the excellent Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino, a thriving art scene which boasts venues such as iconic multi-purpose arts space Centro Gabriela Mistral, leafy parks, and bustling markets, it’s bursting with life. At night, the city comes alive with bars, nightlife, and wild parties. It’s nestled between the Andes and Chilean Coast Range mountains. Chile is also home to Easter Island and its iconic, mysterious moai statues. Head to Torres del Paine National Park for magnificent mountain views, a gigantic, crystal-blue glacier, glassy lakes and emerald-green forests. It’s named after the Torres del Paine, imposing naturally-formed granite towers which dominate the landscape. Head to Arica for beaches and excellent surfing, or to the vineyards of Colchagua Valley for rich red wines, some of the best in South America.
