Traveller immunisations are the best tool to prevent the transmission of diseases like yellow fever, meningitis or typhoid when you are away from home. Jabs for travellers can be live attenuated immunisations (those that use a weakened form of the germ that causes the disease) and inactivated immunisations (which use a dead version of the germ). Both are designed to stimulate the immune system without causing disease.

In most cases, immunisations are voluntary and each traveller can determine if he or she wants to receive them. However, some countries require visitors to present vaccination certificates to allow entry. It may seem a nuisance, but having the recommended vaccinations can make the difference between a pleasant trip and a bad experience abroad.
