Yemen is the second largest Arab-sovereign state in Western Asia and home to 30 million people, but a prolonged civil war has destroyed its infrastructure and economy. Millions of civilians have been affected by the chaos and travel to the country is not safe. Not only are Yemen’s once historic cities in ruins, but there is also a cholera epidemic spreading throughout the country and severe famine in the worst-hit areas. Both the UK and Commonwealth Foreign Office do not recommend traveling to Yemen, even if you can find a flight that will land there.
The neighbouring island of Socotra has not been caught up in the conflict, and flights will stop there. However, foreign powers have still stationed troops on the island and there is no recommendation that the island will continue to be a safe port of arrival. However, pre-crisis Socotra was one of the main targets for tourist development, and there are lovely beaches, unique landscapes and an untouched beauty that’ll take you back thousands of years. Once a place where ancient civilizations prospered, on the tip of Asia, the capital city of Sana’a is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Yemen is also home to Paleolithic history, some of which is visible in the Ancient Tombs outside Sana’a.
