Gambia

The smallest country on the continent, the West African country of Gambia offers an astoundingly diverse range of wildlife and ecosystems. Its 80 kilometres of Atlantic coastline might be small, but it’s perfectly formed, with serene golden-sand beaches, still lagoons and tiny traditional fishing villages sprinkled along its shores. The area around the central Gambia River is especially rich in wildlife.

Capital Banjul is known for colourful local haunts such as the vibrant Albert Market, and colonial buildings such as the National Museum, which now tells the story of Gambia’s history and culture. It’s also a gateway to numerous national parks. Head to the River Gambia National Park for nature aplenty, and the excellent Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project, where over 100 chimpanzees roam free over an area of four islands. Birdwatch at and hike through tiny, rich Abuko Nature Reserve, or wander through the monkey-filled, lush Bijilo Forest Park. At Makasutu Culture Forest, you can see all the country’s various different habitats squashed into a 1000-hectare area. Animal inhabitants here include monitor lizards, baboons and hundreds of different types of bird. Just outside the forest, you’ll find Kubuneh village, whose traditional houses have all been painted with colourful, thought-provoking street art. Head to Serekunda and the coast around for beaches and nightlife.
