Just off Africa’s southeastern shores, Madagascar is an island nation known for extraordinary biodiversity. Thousands of species of animals which are unique to the country, including lemurs, live in its rich rainforests, baobab forests, and deserts. The island is fringed with beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and shimmering blue waters.
Capital Antananarivo, formerly the centre of the Merina kingdom, is full of royal palace and tomb complexes such as Ambohimanga and Andafiavaratra Palace, a pink baroque confection located in nearby Haute Ville. The city has a vibrant culinary scene, and you can also find the Lemurs’ Park here, a private reserve containing around 50 lemurs, offering a chance to see nine different species of lemur up close and personal. Nearby is centuries-old “Avenue of the Baobabs,” where ancient trees tower into the sky. Head to the desert canyons, sandstone rock formations, and sweeping savannah grasslands of Isalo National Park, or to top beach destination Nosy Be for a spot of rest and relaxation. Along the island’s southern reef coastline, the turquoise waters of Anakao can’t be beaten. For a touch of history, head to the imposing rovas (fortress-palaces) of Antananarivo and Ambohimanga.
Madagascar is a country that is generally much safer than its neighbours and most visitors do not experience any trouble during the period of their trip. You are advised however, to sign up with a reliable and well-known tour operator who is aware of safe and unsafe areas in the country.
Crime is still widespread, particularly robbery and theft. You are advised to be vigilant in crowded areas such as markets and keep your belongings secure. You are also advised not to wander alone at night in city centres and rural areas alike, as you will be more susceptible to robbery and other types of crime after nightfall.
