Traveller information
The remote, mountainous kingdom of Bhutan boasts unspoilt, dramatic landscapes, historic fortresses, and breathtaking Buddhist monasteries. Its rich culture is protected by strict visitor limitations, which means that travel here is untarnished by mass tourism. The last great Himalayan kingdom, Bhutan allows visitors to immerse themselves in a truly traditional culture poised on the verge of globalisation. Richly decorated temples, such as Punakha Dzong, demonstrate the country’s well-developed arts and heritage.
In addition to the opportunities for sightseeing, Bhutan is a stunning trekking destination. Set on the eastern edge of the mighty Himalayan mountain range, the country is full of sweeping rocky vistas, ancient Buddhist shrines adorned with fluttering prayer flags, beautiful pine forests, and hikes to suit all abilities. You can’t miss the trek up to the “Tiger’s Nest”, Bhutan’s most sacred religious site – this monastery, founded in 1692, is one of the country’s most iconic buildings. 900 metres high, it clings almost improbably to a sheer cliff face and is accessed by paths well-trodden by pilgrims. Bhutan is also known for its colourful festivals, ubiquitous traditional dress, and unique handicrafts.
